The Village of Saranac Lake receives a share of New York State’s adult-use cannabis tax revenue. The Village uses these funds to support projects, programs, and initiatives that provide a direct community benefit related to youth programs, support for seniors, and recreational opportunities.
Funding is derived from cannabis tax revenue distributed to municipalities under New York State law.
When can I apply?
The Village accepts applications twice each year.
Spring Funding Round
- Application deadline: April 15
- Awards announced: June 15
Fall Funding Round
- Application deadline: October 15
- Awards announced: December 15
Applications received after a deadline will be considered during the next funding round.
How much funding is available?
The amount available for grants will vary from round to round because cannabis tax revenue is based on actual retail sales.
The Village will only award funds that have already been received and are available in the Village’s account. Future or anticipated cannabis tax revenue will not be committed.
Before each award cycle, the Village Treasurer will confirm the amount of funding available.
Any funds that are not awarded may be carried forward to a future funding round.
How are applications reviewed?
After the application deadline, Village staff will review applications for completeness and eligibility.
Eligible applications will then be evaluated based on the program’s funding criteria and presented for consideration through the Village’s established approval process.
Submitting an application does not guarantee funding.
When will I know if my application was approved?
Applicants should expect funding decisions during:
- June 15 for applications submitted by April 15
- December 15 for applications submitted by October 15
Applicants will be notified after final funding decisions are made.
Why does the Village award grants twice a year?
New York State collects and distributes cannabis tax revenue quarterly, but the exact timing and amount received by the Village can vary.
Using two grant cycles each year allows the Village to:
- Make awards based on money actually received
- Provide applicants with predictable deadlines
- Review applications carefully and consistently
- Avoid committing funds before they are available
