The Department of Public Works is responsible for the maintenance, repair, operation, and improvement of Village infrastructure and public facilities.

The Village of Saranac Lake Department of Public Works (DPW) works every day to maintain the infrastructure, public spaces, and essential services that residents, businesses, and visitors rely on.

From maintaining streets and sidewalks, stormwater systems, water and sewer infrastructure, and municipal facilities, the DPW plays a critical role in supporting the quality of life and daily operations of the Village.

The department maintains:

  • Approximately 24 miles of Village streets
  • Approximately 34 miles of sidewalks
  • Stormwater infrastructure
  • Water and sewer systems
  • Municipal buildings and facilities
  • Public rights-of-way

The DPW also supports public safety operations, infrastructure improvements, seasonal maintenance, and community events throughout the year.

Streets

The DPW maintains 24 miles of paved streets. Responsibilities include:

  • Pothole repairs
  • Paving and patching
  • Snow removal
  • Street painting
  • Street signage
  • Street sweeping
  • Trimming within the right-of-way

Sidewalks

The DPW maintains 34 miles of sidewalks.

Water & Sewer Infrastructure

The Department of Public Works supports the operation and maintenance of the Village’s water distribution and wastewater collection systems.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Water main maintenance
  • Sewer infrastructure maintenance
  • Catch basin cleaning
  • Storm drain installation and repair
  • Coordination with treatment facilities
  • Emergency response support
  • Capital improvement projects

Winter Parking Ban

The Village of Saranac Lake maintains a seasonal overnight parking ban to support snow removal operations and winter street maintenance.

All vehicles must be parked off Village streets between:

2 AM – 6 AM

Vehicles found in violation may be:

  • Ticketed
  • Towed at the owner’s expense

These regulations help ensure streets can be safely and effectively plowed during winter weather events.

The parking ban is enforced in accordance with: Village Law § 276-4 Parking

Supporting Community Events

In addition to daily operations, the DPW provides logistical and operational support for many community events and public celebrations throughout the year.

This support may include:

  • Traffic control
  • Barricade placement

Community events supported by the DPW include:

  • Fourth of July Celebration
  • St. Patrick’s Day Parade
  • Winter Carnival

Village Compost Site

The Village of Saranac Lake offers free compost disposal for Village residents at the Village Compost Site located at:

The compost site supports sustainable waste management and provides residents with a location to dispose of eligible yard debris and organic materials.

Eligibility

To use the compost site:

  • You must be a resident of the Village of Saranac Lake
  • A valid compost permit is required

Residents may obtain a permit by:

  • Providing proof of Village residency at the Village Office, or
  • Completing a Compost Permit Application

Approved participants will receive a permit sticker for their vehicle.

Accepted Materials

Accepted materials include:

  • Leaves
  • Grass clippings
  • Small branches
  • Small yard debris

The site does not accept:

  • Household garbage
  • Construction debris
  • Treated wood
  • Large tree materials
  • Commercial dumping

Hours of Operation

Monday – Friday: 7 AM – 2:30 PM

Saturday – Sunday: 7 AM – 12 PM

Hours may be adjusted seasonally or due to operational needs.
