Short-Term Rental Law

The Village of Saranac Lake regulates short-term rentals to help balance tourism, neighborhood character, housing availability, and the quality of life for residents. Property owners who operate a short-term rental within the Village are required to comply with the Village's Short-Term Rental Law and obtain the appropriate approvals and permit before operating.

Short-Term Rental Law

The Village Board adopted the Short-Term Rental Law on June 12, 2023. The law establishes the requirements for operating a short-term rental within the Village, including permit requirements, operational standards, safety requirements, occupancy limits, and enforcement provisions.

Applying for a Short-Term Rental Permit

Property owners wishing to operate a short-term rental must obtain Special Use Permit for an STR approval from the Development Board, submit a complete permit application along with all required supporting documentation, and pay the applicable fees.
