Building Permits
The Village of Saranac Lake Code Enforcement Office is responsible for the administration and enforcement of local and state regulations related to building construction, fire safety, property maintenance, and related code requirements. The office works to support safe, compliant, and well-planned development throughout the community.
Before starting any construction, renovation, demolition, change of use, or exterior improvement project, property owners and contractors are encouraged to contact the Code Enforcement Office to determine what permits or approvals may be required.
The Village works to make the permitting process clear, efficient, and collaborative while ensuring all projects comply with the New York State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code and applicable Village regulations.
A complete and well-prepared application helps projects move through review more efficiently. Applicants are encouraged to carefully prepare project plans, supporting documents, and required information before submission. Clear plans allow property owners, contractors, and Village staff to work together effectively to bring projects from concept to completion safely and successfully.
Before applying, please review the Requirements for Building a Deck and other applicable permit guidance documents.
Please note that project size alone does not determine whether a building permit is required. Even smaller projects may require permits or inspections depending on the scope of work. If you are unsure whether your home or business project requires a permit, please contact the Code Enforcement Office at (518) 891-4150 before beginning work.
