Mayor & Board of Trustees

The Village of Saranac Lake is governed by a Mayor, elected at-large, and four Trustees. In 1929, the Governing Body passed a charter ordinance moving day-to-day operation of the Village's functions to a professional Village Manager while still allowing the community to continue electing the Mayor and four Trustees to pass legislation.

Village Board Meetings are held on the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month

When: 5:30 PM

Where: Village Board Room (2nd floor of Harrietstown Town Hall).

Additional meetings may be held as needed.

Village Administration

Village administration is responsible for the daily operations of municipal government and the implementation of policies adopted by the Village Board of Trustees.

Administrative staff coordinate financial management, records administration, personnel, public works operations, infrastructure planning, regulatory compliance, and delivery of municipal services across Village departments.

The Village of Saranac Lake operates under a Council-Manager form of government. Under this structure, the Village Board establishes policy and legislative direction, while the Village Manager oversees the day-to-day administration and operation of Village government.

Village administration works to support efficient operations, responsible financial management, transparent government, and reliable public services for residents, businesses, and visitors.

Public Service

The Village of Saranac Lake employs more than 50 staff members who provide essential public services throughout the community, including:

  • Public Works
  • Water and Sewer Operations
  • Police and Fire Services
  • Parks and Recreation
  • Community Development and Code Enforcement
  • Finance

The Village is also supported by appointed volunteers serving on committees, advisory boards, and task forces that assist with community planning, policy review, recreation, housing, development, and other municipal initiatives.

Appointed Officers

Under New York State Village Law, several administrative positions are designated as appointed public offices.

These positions include:

  • Manager
  • Clerk
  • Treasurer
  • Deputy Clerk/Treasurer

These offices are appointed by the Mayor with approval of the Village Board of Trustees in accordance with applicable New York State law. Certain appointed public offices may also carry statutory eligibility requirements, including residency requirements established under New York State Public Officers Law and Village Law.
