Anzac Day
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SARANAC LAKE, NY — Saranac Lake will again commemorate Anzac Day on Saturday, April 25, honoring Australia and New Zealand, their service members, and all who have served, while raising awareness of post-traumatic stress.
The village began this tradition twelve years ago following the death of Australian Army Captain Paul McKay on Scarface Mountain.
Mayor Kelly Brunette said, “Saranac Lake is pleased to continue this tradition of remembrance in partnership with our local veterans and community members.”
Brunette expressed appreciation to Chaplain (Colonel) Eric Olsen, New York Army National Guard (Retired), and Command Sergeant Major (Retired) Joe Fisher, New York Army National Guard and Commander of VFW Post 3357, for their leadership and service in organizing this year’s commemoration.
Observed each year on April 25, Anzac Day recognizes members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) who served and died in military operations, beginning with the Gallipoli campaign of World War I.
The day’s events will include:
A pre-dawn “Gunfire” hike to Captain McKay’s memorial on Scarface Mountain.
11:00 AM – Commemoration Ceremony
WWI Monument (Veterans Memorial Park)
The ceremony will follow a traditional program:
Opening Prayer
Welcome
Reading
Moment of Silence
Australian “Last Post” (similar to Taps)
Closing Prayer
Community members, veterans, and visitors are encouraged to attend the Commemoration Ceremony.
Anzac Day serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring bonds between nations and the importance of honoring those who served with courage and sacrifice.
